For distributors

Why distribute RUMIBAL

  • EU feed material

EU feed material (Catalogue of feed materials, entry 12.1.14). No product-level authorisation required in the EU.

  • Full support

A technical dossier in your language, training for your sales team and direct scientific support.

  • A different category

Postbiotics are not probiotics: there are no live bacteria to keep alive.

  • Private label

Labels in the local language and, where agreed, under your own name.

  • No cold chain

Stable at room temperature, so it is easy to store and transport.

  • No withdrawal period

Feed material: no withdrawal period, no prescription required.

The science

The science behind postbiotics

The window

Why the first days matter

A newborn calf arrives with an intestine that is only beginning to be colonised and an immune system that is still learning how to respond.

In the first days of life the gut microbiota settles, the intestinal barrier matures and immune responses are calibrated. That window is short, and what happens in it influences health and performance for months.

Because they do not need to colonise, postbiotics can be given from the first day of life, while the gut and the immune system are still developing.

The window of susceptibility Conceptual diagram: immunity from colostrum falls during the first week while the calf’s own active immunity rises; for a few days both are below the protective level. Definition

What is a postbiotic?

“A preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host.”

ISAPP consensus · Salminen et al., Nat Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol 18: 649–667 (2021) · what is and is not a postbiotic
  • Probiotics · live microorganisms.
  • Prebiotics · substrates that feed beneficial microbes.
  • Postbiotics · inactivated microorganisms and their components. No live bacteria, so they do not need to colonise to act.

Under this definition, a postbiotic starts from a characterised microorganism, grown in culture and then deliberately inactivated. Purified metabolites alone, without the cells, do not qualify.

How a postbiotic is made Lactic acid bacteria are grown by fermentation in culture and then inactivated: the result is inanimate cells, their components and metabolites. 1 · FERMENTATION in culture 2 · INACTIVATION no live bacteria ● METABOLITES ◌ INANIMATE CELLS
Produced by fermentation in culture, then inactivated.

Mechanisms

How postbiotics support the gut

  • Immune balance1 · surface structures of inactivated lactic acid bacteria are recognised by gut immune cells (such as TLR-2); this interaction has been described in the scientific literature.
  • Intestinal barrier2 · short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate are an energy source for the cells of the gut lining.
  • Microbial balance3 · components of inactivated lactic acid bacteria help support a balanced microbiota during colonisation.
  • Antioxidant support4 · some postbiotic components have shown antioxidant activity in published studies.

Described in the scientific literature for postbiotics in general, not results obtained with a specific product.

The official definition

Postbiotics

A postbiotic is a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host.

Components of a postbiotic:

  1. Postbiotics may contain intact inanimate microbial cells…

  2. …and/or microbial cell fragments and structures…

Cell walls, membranes, exopolysaccharides, cell-wall-anchored proteins, pili, etc.

  3. …with or without metabolites and end products.

Organic acids, peptides, secreted proteins, enzymes, bacteriocins, etc.

Postbiotic:

  • Derived from microorganisms, but a postbiotic does not have to be derived from a probiotic.
  • A deliberate process to terminate cell viability must be applied. The final postbiotic must contain inactivated microbial cells and/or metabolites or cell components.
  • Viable cells are absent or negligible in the final product.
  • Evidence of a health benefit in the target host.
  • Assessment of safety of the postbiotic preparation for the intended use.

Not postbiotic:

  • Viruses, including bacteriophages
  • Vaccines
  • Filtrates without cell components
  • Purified microbial components (e.g. proteins, peptides, exopolysaccharides)
  • Purified microbial metabolites (e.g. organic acids)

The postbiotic definition explained:

Postbiotic is derived from “biotic”, relating to living organisms, and “post”, meaning after (life).

Preparation recognises that the specific formulation, including microbial biomass, matrices and inactivation methods, may play a role in the beneficial effect.

Inanimate recognises that the terms “dead” or “inactive” may suggest an inert material, rather than a material capable of conferring a health benefit.

Components recognises that health effects may be mediated by a variety of different cell parts or metabolites.

Responsible use

RUMIBAL is a feed product, not a veterinary medicine. It does not treat or cure diarrhoea or any other disease. It complements, and never replaces, good colostrum management, hygiene, vaccination and veterinary care. A calf with diarrhoea needs a veterinarian and oral rehydration without delay.
